What’s Inside: six levels of the same tune- Pre-reading through intermediate. All levels except intermediate are in a minor, all white keys. Easy levels feature quarter and half notes with only four white keys. Advanced levels feature an easily taught syncopated rhythm, with lots of repetition in the phrases.

Who’s it for: any piano student, beginners through intermediate.

Challenges: 3/4 time for beginners and elementary students; syncopation (eighth, quarter, eighth pattern) for late elementary and intermediate students. I teach it by rote, using the Kodaly syllables “syn-co-pah”. You could also make up any words to go with this rhythm to reinforce learning
.

Studio-tested, this is a well-loved song! It has an understandable meaning behind it - that kids (and all of us) should wear green on St. Patrick’s Day to avoid getting pinched! I do have to explain this tradition to some of my younger students, but they quickly catch on.

I wanted all of my studio to have a version of this piece for the holiday, so I created six levels! In multi-level group lessons, this worked very well. The three beginning levels can play together, keeping the 3/4 simple rhythms going. Levels 2A and 2B are written in 4/4 time, so their versions, along with the jazzy rhythm, feel very fun when played together.

Level 3 is in e minor. I knew my intermediate students needed a challenge in reading this key signature. Why not have the intermediate students play it in both keys?

I hope your students love this as much as mine have. It has become a well-loved tradition!

This is a studio-licensed digital product. Print all 13 pages, or only the ones you need. With your purchase, you may print as many copies as you like for your studio only. Thank you for not sharing with other teachers; this respects the work of the composer.
