Teaching Piano Finger Numbers

I’ve been using Hal Leonard Piano lesson book one. There are several steps to making sure young children know their finger numbers.

First - I ask them to notice that the thumbs are finger one, and I ask them to touch their thumbs together and say “one, one, one.”

Next I do the same thing with pointer fingers say the number two. I do the same with fingers three, four, and five.

Now we are ready to go to my piano and I mix up the numbers. I call out a number and ask them to play that finger with their right hand. They can choose any key. I go through all the numbers in mixed up order, first the right hand, then the left hand.

This is the initial lesson. Of course, we will repeat these concepts with lots of games and reinforce through our songs.

If you would like to see me teach this lesson in action - here’s a link to my YouTube channel (please subscribe - there’s lots of free stuff for teachers)
