Humans are not slot machines…

Especially your beginner student humans. Slot machines are devices that you put coins in, and hope you hit the jackpot.

Beginners have so much potential!

Students are Human, and Want to be Treated as Unique

It's so easy for me to get in a teaching groove (that could be a nice way of saying "teaching rut".)

I have a set of easy rote and reading pieces I like to do with beginners. My favorite games are ready according to the month we are in.

But, is there really a "one size, fits all" approach to beginners? Can I put together my favorite materials and lessons, and expect a jackpot result every time?

After 40 years, kids still surprise me.

Why am I still surprised? Because each child is an individual human.

They come to me with hopes of making music. They also come with their own learning style and varied levels of musical experience.

And, they come with different levels of motivation!

I don't give every child the same beginner book.

Ok, this may be controversial. Some books seem to work better with certain kids than others. I have even switched books when I can see that one is not resonating with a student.

In the same way, no two piano teachers are alike. That's fine with me! I may not be the best teacher for a child, and some one else might have an approach that syncs beautifully with a student.

This is what I love about living in modern times. We have lots of materials to choose from. We can even go with NO BOOKS. We can teach privately. Some teach in groups. Some, like me, are teaching online live lessons. Some students learn through piano courses.

Your role = stay thirsty!

Are you thirsty for more piano teaching knowledge?

A popular adult beverage commercial says, "Stay thirsty, my friends!"

Keep learning, keep stretching, and have an open mindset. Not only about teaching materials or teaching style, but also about your studio as a business.

Are Your Beginner Lessons the Best Ones That You Teach?

Make sure that you are revisiting new and innovative resources for your beginners. Not only will you get great results, but the process will be enjoyable for you!

Long-term, these beginners can stay for several years in our studios. Their happy parents can refer others to our business. Happy students and parents are a wonderful thing for a studio!
