Can you ignore Valentine’s Day in your studio?

of course you can. Here's some thoughts on Valentine's music for piano kids......

Why teach Valentine’s songs when we already have so MUCH to do?

It’s all about love!

The simple answer: Kids love Valentines! The teacher answer: Valentine's songs work great for sightreading, and “easy-win” material! Kids do love to send and receive cards - but the real prize is the CANDY. (Let’s be real.) Do you remember the heart candy we received as kids, the ones with messages on them?

Turns out, they are still a hit! But - nowadays - there are all KINDS of messages on those hearts. (Some that I have seen might be a bit sketchy for kids - so keep that in mind if you give out this stuff!)

A quick search through Chat GPT gave me some sweet, syrupy sayings for heart candy. I also got some way cool sayings, too!

If your students love a vibe that’s more hip, more sharp, and less syrupy - my new song, “Heart Candy” is written just for them! I mean - most 7 year olds, especially boys, just love being cool and being a kid. Capturing those thoughts and feelings in an easy-to-learn song is just the ticket! Here’s a video that highlights what “Heart Candy” is all about!

This song is an elementary piano solo with two optional backing tracks. The audio files are easily downloaded, and you can choose the one with the vocal line, or without. The song is appealing to older beginners, too! Want to know more about the "Heart Candy" song, and who is the right type of student for it?

Other Valentine’s Songs for Kids:

Valentines Day for kids is really about friendship.  Teach kids a wonderful lesson on friendship through the well-loved song, “Make New Friends.”  Use this song as a solo, equal part duet, or student/teacher duet.

Also well-loved is the folk tale about a “Frog Went A-Courtin.” (You might have to explain that courting is a bit like dating.)  Students have loved playing this piece as a solo - or with friends.  The familiar repeated phrase, “uh-huh” - really adds some fun.

You might also like a gentler themed Valentine’s song.  Also available is “What I Love” - which catalogues some of the things kids love and enjoy.  Check out the song here:
