A Love for Color - My Synesthesia > Music
syn·es·the·sia/ˌsinəsˈTHēZH(ē)ə,ˌsinəsˈTHēzēə/
the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body.
I just thought I was weird. (which I now know is a common trait for creative, musical people!)
My synesthesia comes and goes. I hope that as I pay more attention to it - I experience it more often.
Here's how it works for me: when I play or hear a certain key, I get an "impression" of a certain color. I have talked to many people about this and done some research. Apparently, different people have different color associations than I do. That's okay. Some people have different forms of synesthesia - it can be associated with any two forms of perceptions. If you want a deep dive into this topic, I recommend this article:
I have written four piano pieces to celebrate my synesthesia.
My most downloaded music, by far, is this flexible multi-level ensemble. Still centered in the key of D - this piece is easily accessible for beginners. Some of the parts can be taught by rote. You can use it as a solo, duet, or trio.
But that's not enough Yellow!
"Red." Elementary solo, or duet
The key of F major reminds me of red. In this piece, all of the “B Flats” are written out, to make it easier for young students. They get the FEEL of F major without the hassle of a key signature. That, of course, definitely comes later!
Here's a weird one - "White"
Is white a color? From it's popularity in current decorating trends, I say "yes!"
"White" features the key of E major - but don't freak out! I have written out all the sharps, and it doesn't use very many.
I purposefully wrote this piece for young hands. Most of the finger action is in fingers 1, 2, and 3. Look at the sample, hear the audio, and see how easy it is. What a great way to introduce sharps in a comfortable, accessible, patterned piece!
If you are interested in other colors, or other combinations of solo, duet, or ensemble, let me know. Don't agree with my color associations? I want to know that, too! Do you have synesthesia?
