Feeling Overwhelmed? Here’s How to Handle It as a Piano Teacher- 3 Tips
Agree or disagree—the world seems to be moving at a faster pace every day. As teachers, we’re constantly balancing the things we have to learn with the things we want to learn. And sometimes, it can feel like too much. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, especially by technology, you’re not alone. It’s okay to take a step back and breathe.
Here are a few tips that have helped me manage the overwhelm, and I hope they can do the same for you.
1. Prioritize Your Needs and Tools
When you’re feeling the pressure, take a moment (or two or three) to breathe. It’s important to discern what your major tools and needs are in your studio. What’s serving you well? Focus on those areas. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes, keeping things simple is the best way to ensure you and your students are smiling at the end of every day.
2. Schedule Regular Professional Development
While it’s easy to get lost in Facebook groups or follow influencers, sometimes it can be overwhelming. Instead, find a small group of teachers who share your vibe. Whether it’s in-person, online, or both, regularly connecting with like-minded teachers can be incredibly refreshing. Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man (or woman) sharpens another.” This means that by spending time with “our people,” we not only grow professionally but also find renewal in our teaching journey.
3. Don’t Forget Self-Care
Self-care has become quite the buzzword, but for good reason—it’s essential. For me, self-care means taking a long walk in the country every morning, enjoying a barre workout, or practicing yoga and Pilates. A quiet cup of tea with some time to pray or meditate helps me stay grounded. On Fridays, I also meet with a group of local ladies for a book club. It’s a no-pressure group filled with friendship and love.
Self-care also means taking a break from things or people that stress you out. Easier said than done, I know! But it’s crucial for maintaining balance.
Where do you find yourself on the “overwhelm” spectrum? What do you do to cope? Which of these tips resonates with you right now? I’d love to hear from you—please take a moment to share your thoughts.
Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. We’re all in it together, learning and growing as we go.
