Saving a Sea Turtle Through Piano Practice!
Practice practice, how do you get your students to practice? I want to share something I'm doing lately that is inspiring lots of fun practice.
In practice space, this week there is a fantastic new feature called “groups”. Group teachers will use this to put their assignments together for group lessons.
I am using it as a practice incentive. I have created a group of the students in my studio. I called it “Save the Sea Turtles” group. I created an assignment there that is not a real assignment. It's just a place for me to update my students on how we are progressing toward this goal.
Here’s how it works: when students practice with the app, they accumulate “gems.” They can turn them in; and, for a certain amount of gems, I will donate five dollars to the zoo to save a sea turtle.
So far, we have practiced enough where we have raised 95 dollars and we need 25 more before I send in my donation. The students are excited to work together for a goal!
Now, I am going to gladly pay a donation to the sea turtle foundation at the zoo in order to get my kids excited about practicing! Rather than spend money on a prize for individual students (that they may or may not appreciate), I decided to pursue this incentive.
After I donate to the zoo, they will send me some swag that I can share with the students. This cooperative project of saving a sea turtle and doing it through the practice space app has really created some buzz in our studio.
It will probably take us most of the semester to reach this goal! I am super excited about it.
